Premium Dog Food vs Working Dog Food: What’s the difference?

If you’re considering switching to Wilsons complete Cold Pressed dry food (and yes, you absolutely should!) you may have found yourself wondering what the difference is between our Premium and Working Cold Pressed dog food recipes. Well, wonder no more…we’re here to break it down for you.

Put simply, our Working Dog food is designed for very active or working dogs. If your dog receives less than 2 hours of exercise each day, then they are considered to have an average amount of exercise and you should avoid feeding them food that has been specifically designed for very active or working dogs. Food designed for very active or working dogs contains more calories as well as a higher focus on slow-release carbohydrates compared to other dog foods, and if you’re feeding this to your dog who isn’t getting the level of exercise needed to burn off the calories then you risk unwanted weight gain for your dog – which can in turn lead to a whole host of other health issues. Additionally, dogs who are receiving too many calories and not enough exercise can develop behavioural issues.

If your dog is a Working Dog or receives more than 2 hours of exercise each day, then check out our specifically designed Working Dog recipes here: Working Dog Food >

Our Premium Cold Pressed dry dog food range is designed to give a complete and balanced diet to dogs who receive an average amount of exercise each day (less than 2 hours). If you have a working dog or indeed a dog who has a very active lifestyle (more than 2 hours of exercise each day) then it is important that you feed them a food that is designed to give them the calories and nutrition they need to keep them powering through their day. If you feed your very active or working dog our Premium Cold Pressed range you risk your dog not getting enough calories along with unwanted weight loss and a lack of energy during their day to day activities.

If your dog is not a working dog and receives less than 2 hours of exercise each day then our Premium Cold Pressed food is the product you’re looking for: Cold Pressed Dog Food >

What is different about food specifically designed for working dogs

Working dogs, or dogs who have a consistently high level of activity day to day have higher calorie intake needs that those who lead a less active lifestyle. Generally speaking, most food designed for working dogs will contain a higher level of calories and will often contain a larger amount of slow-release carbohydrates like sweet potato and carrot to power your dog through the day.

What is considered to be a very active amount of daily exercise for a dog?

Generally speaking we would suggest that if your dog receives more than 2 hours of vigorous exercise each day then this is a very high level of physical activity. Very active dogs may be able to enjoy a food designed for working dogs. If you’re unsure on your dog’s specific dietary needs, please do have a chat with your vet who will be able to give you guidance based on your specific dogs individual lifestyle.

Why shouldn’t I feed working dog food to my non-working dog?

If you’re feeding a specifically designed food for working dogs to your dog who doesn’t receive a very high amount of exercise each day, then you risk unwanted weight gain for your dog – which can in turn lead to a whole host of other health issues. Additionally, dogs who are receiving too many calories and not enough exercise can develop behavioural issues, so it is advisable to stick to a food designed for your dog.
